10 Gender Neutral and Unisex Nursery Ideas

If this is your first time here, I’m so happy you’re here!

Hi, I’m Lauren! I’m the founder of Sleep + the City, a top-rated baby & toddler sleep agency in Portland, Oregon.

And do you know what?

I’m SO THANKFUL that I get to help families from all around the U.S. with sleep and sleep related situations! For me, it all started when my first son was experiencing sleep issues and the only techniques that I found were cry it out methods… I thought that there needed to be a gentler way. So, I self-studied my way to my son sleeping 8 full hours straight at only 8 weeks old! From there, I fell in love with all things sleep for baby and for ME! I went to sleep consulting school and became a certified sleep expert. Fast forward today - I’ve helped thousands of families and would love to help you too if you need!

So, do you want some ideas for a gender neutral and unisex nursery?

You’ve come to the right spot!

1. Neutral or muted color palette

Creating a beautifully designed gender neutral nursery can seem difficult but you can totally do it by picking neutral or muted colors! So, the creams/tans and whites mixed with woody furniture and maybe some trendy pampas grass will help you create great gender neutral nursery!

When you are trying to create a cozy, cute, and gorgeous gender neutral nursery – one thing you can do is be playful in the decorations while keeping it universal or broad. Yes, you can totally do this! A gender neutral nursery can still showcase you and your family’s personality while staying grounded enough to accomplish the neutral goal. Adding fun and playful books, pictures, and decorations will give you that playful feel to your neutral color palette.

3. Decorate it like the rest of the house

If the goal is gender neutral, that you can totally decorate the nursery like you do the rest of the house! You can still create some baby personality in the room by adding cute photos and stuffed animals while having the nursery look like other rooms. If you do that, you will definitely pull off the gender neutral nursery and have a beautiful nursery!

Boho is such a person gender neutral theme for a baby nursery because of it’s neutral colors, unisex vibe, and it’s just so cute! Elements that can make a nursery boho can be great use of plants, botanical pictures, wicker/wood furniture, more plants, a macramé tapestry, salt lamps, and Aztec or furry rugs.

You have a really cool goal to create a gender neutral and unisex room but you want a color that may go against the grain. Pro tip: experiment with what you want to see if it works or doesn’t work. If you want a gray polka dot feature wall but that terrifies you – try it out because it . just . might . work!

If you want to know some gender neutral colors that can work for a baby nursery - here they are: yellows, greens, oranges, whites, browns. But again, don’t be afraid to experiment with other colors and things that you want!

 8. Never be afraid of greenery

Get yourself a fiddle or fig leaf plant with a nice pot and place it near the crib! If you love it, keep it going and find creative ways to keep a gender neutral look while including greenery! You can buy a botanical blanket to style the crib or even pant the wall with some kind of handing bush. Pops of orange, blue, and cream work well with this look!  And we love a eucalyptus nursery!!

9.     Dress it UP!

If you have the space, dress UP your gender neutral and unisex nursery with normal size dresser instead of a children’s dresser. Using pieces like this in your nursery will not only help keep it gender neutral but also allow you to keep it for years – it will stay with your child as they grow! Accessorize this dresser with a changing pad, snake plant, cute mirror, and a lamp that has usb ports so you can plug in a sound machine!

10.  Colored coordinated comfy chair

Now that is a tongue twister! As we know, having the correct colors is a huge part of creating a great gender neutral and unisex nursery. This includes choosing furniture that matches your color palette. Sometimes, though, we place color in front of comfort. This can leave us sitting in a nursery chair that is super uncomfortable. Creating a gender neutral nursery shouldn’t come at the expense of comfort, especially for nursing mamas! So, one important key is to also choose a super comfortable chair!
