Co-sleeping and bed-sharing can be a tempting option for mothers, as it allows for cuddly bonding moments and can make it easier to put baby back to sleep in the middle of the night. However, it's important to consider the risks associated with bed-sharing. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states that bed-sharing can increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). To keep your baby safe, the AAP recommends room-sharing until your baby is at least 6 months old. Room-sharing means your baby has their own sleeping surface, like a crib or bassinet, in your room. SIDS is the leading cause of death in babies between 1 month and 1 year old, and while the exact causes are not known, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the risk. It's important to note that breastfeeding at night might lead to the occasional bed-sharing, but it's best to avoid it altogether for the safety of your baby.
Starting as early as 13 weeks, your baby (especially those who aren’t able to put themselves to sleep yet), can start experiencing increasingly short naps, that only last 20-30 minutes at a time. But when a baby isn’t quite old enough to sleep train, what can you do?? When your 3 month old is taking short naps on the daily, putting in a little work can pay off HUGE in the months to come.
